Dear family of Father Sigmund; many friends; and brothers in Our Father Francis in our life that Sigmund shared now for fifty years.

In this passage from Matthew’s gospel that we just listened to, we hear from the catechetical tradition, the teaching tradition of the Church. It relates six of the corporal works of mercy:  visiting, clothing, feeding, giving drink, showing solace, the many ways which people can be good to those who have needs.

When it came time to realize that a homily was called for on this occasion, my own mind immediately went into overload because Sigmund has been with us awhile.  He was a public figure and well-known.  It is not easy to categorize him with this or that virtue or the particular way of presenting himself; he’s too much, he’s too rich a personality.
