Reflections - Candidates in Discernment

Below is a reflection by one of our candidates, Alberto Rodriguez, on his experience of one our discernment weekends.

“AND THE LORD GAVE ME BROTHERS”

While visiting the Capuchins in New England over the weekend just after experiencing the exhausting visit of Hurricane Irma to my hometown of Miami, I experienced great joy in spending time with the friars. Before visiting, I could recognize in my own heart a desire for fraternity… an attribute I have noted so dear to the Capuchins. I certainly experienced the joy of fraternity throughout my four day visit.

While spending the weekend with Brother Paul Crawford visiting different fraternities, I laughed to the point of tears in exchanging stories with the brothers, cried of awe while listening to Father Jim Hammer sharing his profound experiences serving Hispanics in New York City, and was satisfied by the Living Water of God in experiencing God’s love first hand in meditative silent prayer with the Lord.

One great characteristic that I noticed among the fraternities I visited during the weekend was the inspiration and joy the older friars offer to both their fraternities and to me as a discerning heart. Seeing the older friars laugh and joke with their brothers demonstrated to me the power of prayer and fraternity that keeps a spark of youth alive in one, no matter how old in bodily age one may be. To me, this is certainly a testament to the reality of God, who is truly Life in abundance.
