Once more the Capuchin Family Ministries community assembled this summer to serve, reflect upon, and worship the one God who loves and nurtures the whole human family.
During Summer Outreach Week, June 28 to July 3, our teenage and adult volunteers proclaimed in word and deed the Good News to those in need in the Hudson Valley. The volunteers built bunk beds for children; visited the elderly and the ill in nursing homes; fed and listened to our brothers and sisters on the streets; and taught the faith to children at Vacation Bible School.
The 32nd annual Capuchin Appalachian Mission commenced on July 12. A caravan of 65 eager teens and adults brought food, clothing, and construction supplies to Harlan, Ky. Over 1,500 young people and adults have joined the friars over the years and donated over $1 million in aid to local families. This aid has included housing repairs; provision of food, supplies, and clothing; a free Vacation Bible School for local children; and ministry to seniors and those living with chronic illnesses. While the economic situation in Harlan is fragile, the people there are resilient, welcoming, and filled with the love of God. They imparted their grace and peace to our mission team, giving us a renewed commitment to serve all and to love God more deeply.
On Aug, 8, a lively company of young people from the Catholic Literature & Arts Summer Program premiered Zacchaeus! A Short Musical before two packed houses at St. Martin de Porres School in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. This original musical, written by Fr. Erik Lenhart, presents the Gospel story of Zacchaeus the tax collector, who climbed a tree for a glimpse of Jesus only to find himself unexpectedly transformed by repentance and love. A team of adult volunteers supported the teen CLASPers and the younger CLASP Jr. participants by providing stage direction, the sets, the pit orchestra, choreography, and sound and lighting. Zacchaeus! A Short Musical brought the Gospel story to life using contemporary musical styles, ranging from classic Broadway to hip-hop. The lively, funny, and poignant telling of Zacchaeus’ story reminded the audience that Jesus’ love is unconditional and extends to all.
Kicking off the CFM summer season on June 14 was our second annual Heart & Sole Capuchin Walk-a-Thon in White Plains, N.Y., which drew over 150 walkers despite the rainy day and raised $62,000 for our summer experiences. Thank you all for your generosity!
